Alderwood Park - 2009 Fix-It Complete!

The Anchorage Park Foundation is partnering with the Parks & Recreation Department to make the fix-its identified by volunteers in neighborhood parks. In summer 2009, volunteers put the finishing touches on the fix-its identified in Alderwood Park in the Anchorage Parks Report Card and celebrated their success with a Community Block Party, including BBQ, games & activities for kids and a visit from an AFD fire truck!
Summer 2009, Government Hill neighbors, volunteers and Youth Employment in Parks crews:
• Cleaned and removed graffiti from play equipment
• Weeded and replenished pea gravel surrounding play equipment
• Removed overgrowth of alders from walkways through park, improving sight lines and making the park much safer
• Assessed route for new trail connecting Alderwood Park to Sunset Park - another neighborhood park in the Government Hill neighborhood
• Repaired bridge; backfilled eroding area and pressure-treated the beams
• Installed new park rules sign on pathway entrances to park
• Installed informational kiosk and new trash cans

Park History
This park property was acquired in 1962 by lease from the Alaska Railroad. As part of the lease, the Parks & Recreation Department was required to plant and maintain grass and flowers, as well as use the property as a community park. In 1965, the park was further developed with the addition of play equipment and picnic tables. In 1972, additional land was donated to the city by the Catholic Church. In the summer of 1997, new play equipment was installed with a train theme. This park was funded by a Community Development Block Grant.
