Park History

Community members originally proposed the creation of a park at this site in 1984. The Municipality of Anchorage purchased the first parcel of property in 1987, and additional properties were added in 1988 and 2000.

The original park plan, developed with community input, envisioned a looping lighted pathway, a wheelchair accessible view mound, an amphitheater area, a large gently sloping “Great Meadow” lawn area, a fountain and an ice skating area. The official grand opening of the first incarnation of the park was held in September 1995.

In 1996, the Midtown Park & Trail Committee began raising funds to add additional facilities to the park. Their volunteer efforts and fundraising secured support to construct the amenities and landscaping installed in the park today.

In 2000, the park was rededicated to honor the Cuddy family, who donated 9.5 acres of land as well was funding for construction of park amenities.

The park contains the only full length speed skating oval in Alaska, and only the 6th in the country.
