In the summer of 2009, the Anchorage Park Foundation, the Parks & Recreation Department and neighbors of Pamela Joy Lowry Memorial Park worked together to make Fix-Its identified in the Anchorage Parks Report Card.
Volunteer work continued throughout the summer, accomplishing a complete “makeover” of Pamela Joy Lowry Memorial Park. NeighborWorks volunteers contributed 200 hours of volunteer labor and neighborhood volunteers contributed another 180 volunteer hours at an all-day work-day in mid July. RIM Architects provided volunteer design and labor to create an outdoor classroom facility in the wetlands area of this park. Other staff, neighbor and volunteer accomplishments included:
• Removed sand from play area and replaced with eight truckloads of pea gravel by hand
• Designed and constructed an outdoor classroom structure for use by students and teachers from nearby Chinook Elementary School
• Added gravel to lift muddy trails
• Hauled tons of debris out of creek and pond and removed from site
• Installed new park rules sign and new trash can
• Installed signs on bollards at trail entrances to the park to improve park accessibility
• Removed graffiti, painted and cleaned play equipment
• Added one new picnic table
• Used sand from play area to create new seating area with two new benches
• Thinned vegetation along all pathways to improve line of sight
• Fixed broken bollards on Dimond Boulevard entrance

This park property was acquired in 1989 with partial funding from a neighborhood park improvement district. Community member Christy Lowry helped form the neighborhood park improvement district and was instrumental in securing state grants to develop this property into a park and install the play equipment.
The park was originally known as Hathor Park. In 1990, the Sand Lake Community Council asked to rename the park Pamela Joy Lowry Memorial Park in honor of Christy Lowry’s daughter, who had been killed in a vehicle accident.
