What's New

During summer 2009, several volunteer groups worked in Red Bridge Park to make the Fix-Its identified in the Anchorage Parks Report Card, culminating in a volunteer block party. A handful of intrepid Boy Scouts, volunteers from the University of Alaska Anchorage Fusion group and parks lovers worked hard to improve Red Bridge Park. The highlight of their work was repainting the Red Bridge . . . red. Accomplishments included:

• Repaired the road near the entrance to the park to ensure safe access year-round
• Repaired and repainted the Red Bridge in the center of the park
• Weeded the entire park and removed dead trees
• Installed park sign in pathway to highlight entrances to the park
• Installed new park rules sign, benches and trash can
• Replenished pea gravel safety surfacing in play area
• Cleaned and repainted play equipment

For more details on the accomplishments in this and other neighborhood parks, please read the 2009 Neighborhood Park Fix-It Summary Report.

Park History

This property was acquired through purchase and tax foreclosure in 1974. In 1976, the Exchange Club of Anchorage proposed developing this site as a park. They offered to clean the area, and provide grass seed and picnic equipment. Funds for development of the park were provided through a Community Development Block Grant.

The play equipment was installed by club members as a volunteer project, working directly with the Parks & Recreation Department. The park was named Red Bridge Park after the red bridge in the center of the park by school children in a contest in 1978.

In 1980, the park was landscaped with trees & shrubs, and in 1996 the playground was redesigned and replaced.
