Park History

In 1978, the Spenard Community Council asked the Parks & Recreation Department to purchase this property for park land. The neighborhood was developing into an industrial area and the community wanted to ensure that there was a buffer space. Negotiations for purchase of this property began in 1977, and the purchase was finalized in December 1979. In 1980, the park was named Sisterhood Park to honor the Alaska Native Brotherhood & Alaska Native Sisterhood.

The West Anchorage Little League had a private agreement with the previous landowner and built a ball field, which is called Brotherhood Park. The park was dedicated on June 20, 1981 with a Potlach, a baseball game with the Assembly Members against the Legislature and a big street dance to celebrate the new parks in Spenard. This park is located next to both the Spenard Recreation Center and Northwood Elementary School.
