Note from the Development Director
We weren't done skiing, but this Anchorage Park Foundation quarterly e-newsletter finds you during Breakup 2008.
Park user groups are busy talking to their legislators about capital funding requests, hosting the Assembly Candidate Forum, and applying for challenge grants to make capital improvements to parks and trails. This e-newsletter can keep you in that very busy loop!
Recent News
The Alaska State Legislature is in session, and the capital budget is not yet ready. Now is the time for constituencies to articulate their parks & recreation needs. Click here to see maps of the park projects for state funding consideration.
The bond season is upon us, and talk among recreation users turns to whether the public will support GO bonds April 1st. Bonds to upgrade pools could be matched by a state legislative grant. Stay tuned.
Parks & Recreation will hire 44 teens ages 16-18 and 6 assistant crew leaders ages 17-20 this summer for Youth Employment in Parks! Learn more and download an application on here.
John Byrne III Provides Bikes for Local Youth
Alyeska Resort's John Byrne III was the top funder for the Martin Luther King Jr. 50 Bikes for 50 Kids event this year.
298 volunteers gave their time in January to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a Day On, Not a Day Off. Thanks!
We are already planning to do another 50 bikes for 50 kids for 2009 MLK day!
Volunteer Opportunities
Along with all the opportunities to clean and fix up the parks listed in our events section, please consider ongoing opportunities you and your active organization may want to take up:
Adopt-A-Park: Volunteers remove trash at least once a month and report safety hazards and concerns to Parks & Recreation. A sign is displayed in the adopted park recognizing the name or group name and the contribution they make to the park.
Adopt-A-Trail: Adopt a segment of trail with the same responsibilities as adopt-a-park -- the program always needs more community involvement!
Clean & Green: Community volunteer groups make a physical improvement to a park under Parks & Recreation leadership. Painting and pruning for trail safety are the two most popular projects.
Foster-a-Flower: Parks and Recreation displays over 1,000 hanging baskets in the Downtown and Spenard business districts each summer. Flower baskets can be fostered for $75. Foster two baskets for $150 and we will place a plaque on a light pole recognizing your donation.
