Anchorage Park Foundation
2011 Parks Bond Update

Beth NordlundNote from the Executive Director on the Parks Bond - Proposition 5

On Tuesday, April 5th, you will have an opportunity to invest in revitalizing key parks and trails that make Anchorage a great place to live, work and play. The Anchorage Park Foundation supports the parks bond and we think you should know why:

• Public support for neighborhood parks will improve the parks closest to your homes, and let our private investors know voters care for parks

• Our system of greenbelt trails is a world class asset that connects our community and requires investment

• We think Anchorage is ready for an off-leash dog park at the South Anchorage Sports Complex

These opportunities don't come around often – it's been four years since Anchorage citizens have had the chance to vote on a Parks bond. That's why your support of this upcoming parks bond is important.

- Beth Nordlund

The APF Investment

The proposed 2011 Parks Bond totaling $3 million will leverage approximately $2.5 million through the Anchorage Park Foundation:

Anchorage Park Foundation Investment: $980,000
Federal Funding Secured: $472,000
Legislative Funding Secured:  $935,000
Anticipated Individual Donations: $150,000
Anticipated Volunteer Hours Contribution: $390,000

Total: $2.5 million over three years

Our Municipal Parks Department and the Anchorage Park Foundation do a top job of mobilizing volunteer-powered teams and planning smart to squeeze every single penny out of the frugal funds devoted to parks rehabilitation. Partnering with community groups we have done amazing things to transform neighborhood and community parks into clean and safe places to recreate and enjoy. However, much more needs to be done and this year's $3 million parks bond is targeted to address many more important rehabilitation projects. DID YOU KNOW?  The debt shall be first paid from real and personal property taxes levied and collected within the Anchorage Bowl Parks and Recreation Service Area, without cost to properties in Chugiak, Eagle River, Girdwood, and other areas outside the Service Area. Anchorage Bowl homeowners will see an approximate $2 dollar increase in annual property taxes for a home valued at $250,000.
