The Anchorage Park Foundation is partnering with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Living Memorial Committee to raise funds to rehabilitate and revitalize the Memorial on the Park Strip.
In the 1990s, volunteers raised more than $250,000 in community contributions to build the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial honoring Dr. King's contributions to our country. The committee enlisted artist Jerome Meadows to create bronze panels describing Dr. King's accomplishments. The memorial includes a brick plaza, the bronze panels and a bust of Dr. King, all designed to inspire visitors to reflect on Dr. King's message and mission.
In the ten years since the Memorial's installation, the commemorative panels have been degraded by the weather and vandalism, the patio bricks are cracked and the landscaping is overgrown. It's time to restore this Memorial!
The Living Memorial Committee, comprising Jim Barnett, Rick Mystrom, Connie Jones, Elvi Gray-Jackson, Eleanor Andrews, Jim Posey, Darrel Hess, Marilyn Stewart-Richardson, Joy Green-Armstrong and Rev. Alonzo Patterson, seeks public and private funds to restore this monument to reflect Anchorage's commitment to honoring Dr. King's memory.
